Ask Amy: Family secrets revealed to the wrong person

Dear Amy: I recently found out details of my wife’s family secrets — that her grandfather committed horrible sexual abuse against his own children. He was never prosecuted (or even accused). This happened back in the ’30s and ’40s when no one spoke of such things. In fact, everyone acts like nothing ever happened. They only speak vaguely about him.I’m not sure how much my wife or her siblings actually know about this.I’ve tried to bring it up with her after my discovery (I found out through conversations with a distant cousin), but she shut me down and does not want to discuss anything. Her parents are both deceased, but according to the cousin, they were not willing to discuss anything with her, either. It’s very complicated, devastating and sad for me.My heart aches for her siblings and the way they grew up (the father was alcoholic, and the mother very manipulative and emotionally distant).I’m wondering if I should try to bring up the subject with them (I’m pretty close to all s...Millions of kids — including 300,000 in Colorado — are missing weeks of school as attendance tanks across U.S.

By BIANCA VÁZQUEZ TONESS, AP Education WriterSPRINGFIELD, Mass. — When in-person school resumed after pandemic closures, Rousmery Negrón and her 11-year-old son both noticed a change: School seemed less welcoming.Parents were no longer allowed in the building without appointments, she said, and punishments were more severe. Everyone seemed less tolerant, more angry. Negrón’s son told her he overheard a teacher mocking his learning disabilities, calling him an ugly name. Her son didn’t want to go to school anymore. And she didn’t feel he was safe there. He would end up missing more than five months of sixth grade.Across the country, students have been absent at record rates since schools reopened during the pandemic. More than a quarter of students missed at least 10% of the 2021-22 school year, making them chronically absent, according to the most recent data available. Before the pandemic, only 15% of students missed that much school. All told, an estimated 6.5 million add...Majestic grand estate in Crocker Highlands

Today’s deal arose in the 1969 Bermuda Bowl in Rio and stirs memories for me though I certainly wasn’t involved. In 1968 I was in Korea in the Army and wound up on a team representing Korea in the Far East Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.Australia won but couldn’t attend the World Championship, so Taiwan’s team went — and finished second. I remember playing against Australia, whom we actually beat, and Taiwan, who murdered us.Declarer at 3NT was Gerard Desrousseaux of France. West led a heart, and East took the ace and returned a heart. South won and needed the next eight tricks. He cashed five clubs, and East discarded three diamonds.MAKING THREESouth next led a spade: queen, king, four. On the next spade, East played low, and South … put up his ace, dropping West’s jack. Making three.I suspect that declarer guessed right in spades because East never discarded one on the run of the clubs. If East had held five spades, he surely would...Horoscopes Aug. 11, 2023: Chris Hemsworth, change may be inevitable

Parents who’ve been involved in monitoring their children’s academic progress from kindergarten through high school may be surprised to know that they may not get the same access to their child’s grades and school-related information once their child turns 18.The Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) covers students once they turn 18, so getting all the information on their academic progress on a college or university campus — or even while they’re still in high school — means a parent will want to talk with their adult child about getting written permission.Barry Glassman, president of Glassman Wealth Associates, said there are “passionate debates” over whether parents should have access to those records. For those parents who are paying all or a large portion of college expenses, “They’re investing in the child’s education, and they want to know how the child is doing, especially in the first few years,” he said.Glassman said other parents may want their c...Lauren James’ red card prevents showdown with Linda Caicedo at the Women’s World Cup

SYDNEY (AP) — England vs. Colombia should have seen two of the most exciting young players at the Women’s World Cup go head-to-head. Instead, Lauren James’ red card for standing on Nigeria defender Michelle Alozie means the England forward will miss the quarterfinal in Sydney on Saturday and a showdown with Colombia’s Linda Caicedo. James will also miss the semifinals if the Lionesses advance, after FIFA extended her ban for violent conduct.“We respect that punishment. We take it from here and hope we get through,” England coach Sarina Wiegman said Friday. “We know how we want to fill in that position. It’s a team effort and we support each other and we fill in places that come free.”James’ suspension has denied viewers the prospect of seeing her go up against Caicedo, who has been outstanding during her team’s run to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time. James made a big impression in the group stage of her first World Cup. She scored a...Latest news
