BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — New coach Mark Madsen recognizes all that went wrong for California men’s basketball last season, and he also insists that from those struggles has been tremendous growth. He’s counting on that as Cal tries to bounce back with a new-look roster and new leader.Even if the loyal fan base in Berkeley might not have seen the development watching the Golden Bears last season. Madsen also realizes he has quite a task at hand to turn over a proud program that is reeling from the embarrassment of so much losing.Madsen is guiding the Bears following a forgettable 3-29 season — worst in school history — that led to the firing of former coach Mark Fox.“It was a tough year last year for Cal, but it’s not like there wasn’t a lot of work going on behind the scenes. We’re probably benefiting right now from a lot of the work, just even in terms of infrastructure,” Madsen said. “I’ve never been more optimistic, and I love our team. I love all the changes tha...Haaland ends barren streak in Champions League with 2 goals in Man City’s 3-1 win over Young Boys

BERN, Switzerland (AP) — Erling Haaland’s barren streak in the Champions League is over. Two second-half goals by the scoring phenom led Manchester City to a 3-1 win at Young Boys and the brink of the knockout stage already in its title defense.Haaland hadn’t scored in his previous five matches in the competition, stretching back to last season’s semifinals in May, but he ended that improbable run by blasting a spot kick down the middle in the 67th to put City 2-1 ahead. The Norway striker wrapped up the victory by curling a shot into the top corner with his weaker right foot in the 86th minute.“People expect him to score four goals every time,” City manager Pep Guardiola said. “They want him to fail.“I’m sorry, this guy’s going to score goals all the time … He is going to score until the last day he plays football.”It’s now 37 goals in 33 Champions League games for Haaland, who is into double figures (11) for the season in all competitions as he looks to...Stanford features a more veteran, experienced team going into the season
