The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is spearheading a major effort to save Orange County's world-famous beaches from a natural threat: erosion.The problem of disappearing sand is nothing new but has become more alarming in recent years. In March, the U.S. Geological Survey released a report predicting that rising sea levels could erode 25% to 70% of California’s coastline by 2100, The Orange County Register reported.The erosion isn’t just a threat to the beauty and recreational uses of the beaches. The planned high-speed rail project that will connect Las Vegas to Southern California has received a massive boost from the Biden Administration, securing $3 billion in grant funding from the federal government.Brightline West plans to break ground in 2024, with hopes to have regular high-speed rail service by as early as 2027. The estimated $12 billion project will connect Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga, where a new transit center will offer California residents the ability to transfer onto Metrolink. 73-Year-Old Woman Pronounced Dead after Pedestrian Collision near Paseo TrailCHANDLER, AZ (December 5, 2023) – Melinda Epperson died Monday morning in a hit-and-run pedestrian collision on Ocotillo Road and Chandler Paseo Trail. The incident occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m., on November 27th.Officers say a BMW sedan driven by 26-year-old Keith Taylor was heading east on Ocotillo Road when it collided with 73-year-old Epperson, who was walking in the crosswalk.After the collision, Taylor promptly left the scene and was involved in another two-car accident by running a red light at McQueen and Ocotillo Road. Taylor then attempted to escape on foot.Law enforcement successfully located and apprehended Taylor, who exhibited signs of impairment. 24-Year-Old Man Pronounced Dead after Head-On Collision near 12th AvenueKINGS COUNTY, CA (December 5, 2023) – David Barajas and Steven Mahoney were involved in a deadly wrong-way collision on Highway 198, early Sunday morning.At approximately 2:00 a.m., law enforcement responded to an incident occurring in the eastbound lanes near 12th Avenue. The investigation is ongoing into why the driver of a Toyota Corolla was traveling in the wrong direction on the highway.The Toyota eventually collided with an eastbound Ford F-250, operated by Barajas, resulting in a collision with a Kia Soul driven by 63-year-old Mahoney. The Ford then overturned onto the road.Upon impact, the Toyota ignited in flames, and the Ford landed on top of the Kia Soul.
