SF Giants in danger of historic attendance low at China Basin park SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Giants have never played before an announced crowd smaller than 20,000 since they moved into their China Basin ballpark more than two decades ago. They certainly came close Monday in their series-opening game against the St. Louis Cardinals.A crowd of 20,203, the smallest attendance figure of the season at Oracle Park, watched Alex Cobb’s complete game shutout Monday night as the Giants beat the Cardinals 4-0.The crowd was the smallest to watch a Giants game at the park, which opened in 2000, since May 9 of last season when 20,039 were in attendance for a game with the Colorado Rockies. It was one of four times in 2022 that the Giants had announced a crowd of less than 21,000.Still, Giants CEO Larry Baer isn’t sounding the alarm, at least not yet. The Giants, through 11 home games this season, are averaging 30,616 per game, which ranks 13th in MLB and is roughly the same as last season’s average attendance of 30,650, which was 12th-best.“...

(AP) — Carolina Panthers coach Frank Reich says he and general manager Scott Fitterer have agreed on which quarterback the team will select with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. But Reich says the team won’t announce who that is until Thursday night, when the draft begins. The Panthers are choosing between Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson in an effort to upgrade a quarterback position that has been in transition for the last five seasons.Fitterer said last week he had waited to ask Reich who he preferred at No. 1 so that nothing would cloud either decision-maker’s judgement. But on Monday Fitterer finally walked into Reich’s office and popped the question on who he prefers — and both agreed on the same QB.“It was kind of like a proposal — and I said yes,” Reich joked Tuesday. “But there is consensus and we are excited.”Young remains the overwhelming favorite to be the first Panthers QB selected No. ...

Roberts declines Senate request to testify on court ethics WASHINGTON (AP) — Chief Justice John Roberts has declined a request from the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify at a hearing next week on ethical standards at the court, instead providing the panel with a statement of ethics reaffirmed by the court’s nine justices. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin, D-Ill., invited Roberts’ testimony last week, saying that there had been a “steady stream of revelations” regarding Supreme Court justices “falling short of ethical standards expected of other federal judges.” The invitation came after news reports that detailed a close relationship between Justice Clarence Thomas and a conservative donor from Texas. The donor, Dallas billionaire Harlan Crow, had purchased three properties belonging to Thomas and his family in a transaction worth more than $100,000 that Thomas never reported, according to the nonprofit investigative journalism organization ProPublica. In a letter to Durbin on Tuesday, Roberts said he would “re...

Rent control bill fails in committee

Rent control bill fails in committee DENVER (KDVR) — A bill that would have repealed Colorado's ban on rent control has died in committee.House Bill 1115 was heard Tuesday evening in the Senate Local Government and Housing Committee. Lawmakers killed the bill in a 4-3 vote. The bill would have allowed local governments to enact rent control policies. Rent control is prohibited under state law, and the proposal would have lifted the ban."We really need to do something to make sure that people can live in the communities that they work in," Rep. Javier Mabrey, a prime sponsor Democrat who represents Denver and Jefferson counties, has said of the rent control effort. Want lower RTD fares? It's possible next year. Here’s how to make your voice heard. The measure had better support in the House, where it passed on third reading in a 40-24 vote. It's unclear how the bill would have fared if it cleared the Senate. Gov. Jared Polis publicly opposed rent stabilization in a mobile home protection bill last year. On this year's ...

Colorado resorts expect more skiers after snowstorm

Colorado resorts expect more skiers after snowstorm LOVELAND SKI AREA, Colo. (KDVR) --  Loveland Ski Area started the lifts Tuesday morning with 4 inches of fresh snowfall overnight and more snow on the way. "We could see up to a foot of fresh snow for tomorrow morning," said John Sellers, the Marketing Director Loveland Ski Area. The Pinpoint Weather team is forecasting a snowstorm to blow into Colorado Tuesday and Sellers said they are excited for all the snow. He said Loveland Ski Area's location is a total bonus. "Our elevation helps us a lot. Right here at the base, we are at 10,800 feet, so we can hold snow all season," Sellers said. Despite Colorado often experiencing spring snowstorms, Sellers said the ski area usually sets its closing date for the first week of May. He said there have been only a few seasons when the ski area has stayed open into mid-May. The reason for that closing date is so they can start getting ready for summer projects on the mountain.  Denver weather: Evening rain,...
