Ukraine accuses local man of directing deadly Russia attack By Hanna Arhirova | Associated PressKYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian authorities on Wednesday arrested a man they accused of helping Russia direct a missile strike that killed at least 11 people, including three teenagers, at a popular pizza restaurant in eastern Ukraine. The Tuesday evening attack on Kramatorsk wounded 61 other people, Ukraine’s National Police said. It was the latest bombardment of a Ukrainian city, a tactic Russia has used heavily in the 16-month-old war.The strike, and others across Ukraine late Tuesday and early Wednesday, indicated that the Kremlin is not easing its aerial onslaught, despite political and military turmoil at home after a short-lived armed uprising in Russia last weekend. There has been no apparent military push by Ukraine to exploit that turmoil, though the government has been tight-lipped about recent battlefield developments as it seeks to gain momentum in its recently launched counteroffensive. The Kremlin reeled from the weekend mutiny led by ...

Why airline delays and cancellations are so bad: It’s not just the weather By Chris Isidore and Caroll Alvarado | CNNNew York  — Hundreds of thousands of US airline customers were stranded this week as severe weather grounded planes and led to canceled flights. But storms were only one factor behind the travel nightmare. Staffing shortages, at both US airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic control operations, took a bad situation and made it worse. The situation at US airports was only slightly better Wednesday. As of noon ET, FlightAware tracking service reported there were nearly 800 flights canceled and another 1,400 delays. Storms in the Boston area caused a groundstop there early Wednesday, keeping planes destined for Logan Airport at the gate or parked on the tarmac at airports around the country.Although that’s better than the 2,200 canceled flights in each of the last two days, or the more than 16,000 delayed flights between Monday and Tuesday, it’s hardly a smooth-running operation.Staffing shortageThe US air travel system i...

San Francisco's plan for housing young adults at SoMa site facing backlash SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco's plan to provide long-term housing for young adults experiencing homelessness at 1174 Folsom Street is facing backlash from some SoMa residents. In May, Mayor London Breed announced a proposal for the city to purchase a 42-unit building at 1174 Folsom Street for use as supportive housing for young adults. The building would provide "long-term affordable housing with onsite social services to help young adult tenants access and maintain housing stability," the Mayor's Office wrote.Shireen McSpadden, the city's Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing director, said, "Creating this home in the SoMa community will be transformational for the 42 youth who will reside at 1174 Folsom Street. We are excited to provide these young people with dignified housing and a safe and nurturing environment in which to thrive."The violent death of Banko Brown in April placed a spotlight on homeless young adults who are struggling in San Francisco. Rain has failed to quell Canadian wildfires, and more smoky haze is on the way, officials say TORONTO (AP) — Canadian wildfires will send worsening smoky air across the country and neighboring United States in coming days after recent heavy rains failed to fall in areas of Quebec where the fires are most active, officials said Wednesday.Drifting smoke from the wildfires has lowered curtains of haze on broad swaths of Canada and the United States, pushing into southern Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, and moving into parts of West Virginia. Canadian officials say it is the nation’s worst wildfire season ever and they expect air quality to remain a concern through the summer, as long as the fires continue. It started early on drier-than-usual ground and accelerated very quickly, exhausting firefighting resources across the country, fire and environmental officials said.Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Steven Flisfeder said smoke will migrate across Quebec and Ontario over the next few days, and that air quality will deteriorate as a result.“As long as the fires a...

Florida man featured on ‘America’s Most Wanted’ arrested after 39 years for 1984 cold case murder After evading capture for nearly four decades, a Florida man wanted for the 1984 murder of a woman in the Tampa area was arrested and extradited back to Florida. According to officials with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Donald Santini, 65, was arrested in San Diego and booked into a Florida jail early Tuesday morning. Santini had been wanted for the murder of Cynthia Wood, a 33-year-old woman who had been going through a divorce at the time.
