PERRY, Fla. (AP) — Hurricane Idalia tore into Florida with winds howling at the speed of a fast-moving train Wednesday, splitting trees in half, ripping roofs off hotels and turning small cars into boats before sweeping into Georgia as a still-powerful storm that flooded roadways and sent residents running for higher ground.“All hell broke loose,” said Belond Thomas of Perry, a mill town located just inland from the Big Bend region where Idalia came ashore.Thomas fled with her family and some friends to a motel, thinking it would be safer than riding out the storm at home. But as Idalia’s eye passed over about 8:30 a.m., a loud whistling noise pierced the air and the high winds ripped the building’s roof off, sending debris down on her pregnant daughter, who was lying in bed. Fortunately, she was not injured.“It was frightening,” Thomas said. “Things were just going so fast. … Everything was spinning.”After coming ashore, Idalia made landfall near Keaton Beac...Strip Loin with Puffed Rice / Tanuki, Miami

(TMX) – A U.S. district judge in Miami last week rejected Burger King’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit alleging the company misled customers by making its Whopper sandwich appear larger than it really is on restaurant signage. The proposed class action lawsuit accuses the fast-food chain of using images on menus and store signage that show a Whopper with ingredients that “overflow the bun,” leading customers to believe the sandwich is larger and contains more meat than it does in reality.U.S. District Judge Roy Altman ruled on Friday that Burger King will have to defend against the plaintiffs’ claims. In addition to the alleged breach of contract, Altman will allow the plaintiffs to pursue claims of negligence and unjust enrichment. However, Altman rejected plaintiffs’ claims regarding TV and online ads, noting that none of them made specific claims of sandwich size or patty weight that the restaurant failed to meet.Other fast-food chains are facing si...Maynard police seek help finding suspects linked to crash involving stolen car

Maynard police have asked for the public’s help in efforts to find a group of suspects accused in connection with a crash involving a stolen car early Wednesday morning.Police said officers first responded around 3:30 a.m. after receiving reports of people breaking into and stealing cars at a used car dealership on Acton Street. Once on scene, police said, officers found several cars blocking the road as other vehicles left the area. Police said officers later activated their emergency lights and tried to stop one apparently stolen vehicle after they saw it driving down Route 27 and turning the wrong way onto Main Street in Maynard. Instead of stopping, police said the driver sped away before crashing in the area of 217 Main Street and running from the crash site on foot. Maynard police said other area law enforcement agencies as well as state police joined in a search for the driver but were unable to find them. Police separately shared video of the crash captur...Boston City Council punts Mass. and Cass ordinance to public hearing

The Boston City Council quietly moved one of the most-talked-about issues in the city into its legislative process Wednesday with little discussion in the chamber, rejecting an attempt to immediately adopt the mayor’s strategy for addressing encampments in an area that’s at the center of the state’s opioid epidemic. The council sent a Mayor Michelle Wu ordinance related to the homeless encampment at Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard to its Committee on Government Operations — after Wu’s announcement last week of a new approach to address the tent city and “open air drug market” on the border of Roxbury and the South End grabbed headlines and sparked strong reactions across Boston.Wu on Monday filed the ordinance, which would give police the power to immediately remove tents and tarps on public property and roads. Under current protocol, Boston officials have to give 48-hours notice. The mayor’s “phase ch...Boston police, BPS take part in inaugural ‘Dodge Bowl’ in Hyde Park

The dodgeball tournament ran with the goal of strengthening the partnership between the school engagement unit and BPS safety specialists, as described in a press release from the Boston Public Schools. “Although we’re adults, inside there’s always that inner child, and what better way than to just let it go, relax and just be ready for the school year,” said Boston Public Schools Engagement Unit Commander Juana Hernandez. As officials got out of uniform and hit the court, Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox and Boston Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper joined in. “This is, to me, a good celebration of fun and joy, of coming together,” Skipper told reporters. “Sometimes, we forget that life is also about enjoying each other’s company and h...Feds question Tesla on no-hands driving

DETROIT — Tesla is allowing some drivers to use its Autopilot driver-assist system for extended periods without making them put their hands on the steering wheel, a development that has drawn concern from U.S. safety regulators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has ordered Tesla to tell the agency how many vehicles have received a software update making that possible and it’s seeking more information on what the electric vehicle maker’s plans are for wider distribution.“NHTSA is concerned that this feature was introduced to consumer vehicles, and now that the existence of this feature is known to the public, more drivers may attempt to activate it,” John Donaldson, the agency’s acting chief counsel, wrote in a July 26 letter to Tesla that was posted on the agency’s website. “The resulting relaxation of controls designed to ensure that the driver remain engaged in the dynamic driving task could lead to greater driver inattent...Source: Patriots Tyquan Thornton to start season on injured reserve
