BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The cold and snowy day at Folsom Field began with Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders taking off his white cowboy hat near midfield and taking a bow.It ended in virtually the same spot, with the Buffaloes huddled around their new coach and the crowd cheering.Sanders and the Buffaloes certainly staged quite a show Saturday with the stands full of fans eager to catch a glimpse of what could be in store come fall. In more of a glorified practice than a spring game due to the snowy conditions, the Buffaloes showed something they haven’t in a hot minute — promise.“I’m amazed and just stoked,” said Sanders, who’s overhauling a squad that went 1-11 last season. “Today was phenomenal. I’m really happy, appreciative and thankful.”All of it was quite a spectacle. There was the kickoff by Peggy Coppom, a big Buffaloes fan in her 90s who Sanders enticed to boot the ball to begin the action.“Her kickoff was phenomenal. Went through the uprights and everything,” joked Sa...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Opening day starter Logan Webb stopped his four-game losing streak, holding the Mets hot offense to two runs in seven innings and leading the San Francisco Giants over New York 7-4 on Saturday.Webb (1-4) struck out eight and walked one for his first win since signing a $90 million, five-year contract for 2024-28, a deal announced April 14.San Francisco (7-13) avoided losing 14 of its first 20 games, which would match the worst opening in team history. The Mets lost for the second time in nine games on their 10-game California trip. The Giants, who were shut out Friday and have struggled to score all season, spotted Webb to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, when Brandon Crawford hit a three-run homer. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama is once again trying to replace an NFL-bound quarterback with another who can lead the Crimson Tide to championships.Next up: Presumably Jalen Milroe, a dynamic runner with one career start, or five-star prospect Ty Simpson. They’re vying to replace 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young, who appears poised to become the first Alabama passer picked No. 1 in the modern NFL draft. The Tide failed to make the College Football Playoffs even with him, potentially ratcheting up the pressure on whoever emerges as Young’s successor. Now, he’s the latest Tide quarterback to leave early for the NFL, where Mac Jones, Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa are already starters. The current competition figures to carry over into preseason camp after the Tide wrapped up spring practice Saturday with its spring game before an announced crowd of 58,710.Alabama coach Nick Saban said a major focus has been on the quarterbacks being able to process what the defense is ...

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Although Donald Trump has often avoided talking about abortion as he campaigns again for the White House, his former vice president, Mike Pence, is not shying away from celebrating Trump’s efforts to restrict abortion rights.Pence, who is weighing whether to launch his own presidential campaign, raised his voice to nearly a roar when speaking to religious conservatives in Iowa on Saturday night as he touted Trump’s nominations of three conservative judges to the U.S. Supreme Court. The appointments paved the way to the court in 2022 overturning the landmark Roe. v. Wade ruling, which had affirmed a federal right to abortion.Pence, long known for his conservative values, called the appointments “the most important of all” the accomplishments of the Trump administration, drawing loud applause and cheers from the crowd of influential religious conservatives.“We did that, Iowa,” he said. “I couldn’t be more proud to have been a smal...

Chicago Cubs rookie Hayden Wesneski struggles in another short start, leading to a 9-4 loss to the LA Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts poked his head out of the tunnel a few hours before Saturday’s game at Wrigley Field just in time to get a face full of cold and a eyeful of snow flurries.“This is great,” Roberts said, scanning the sky and smiling. “I’m pleasantly surprised. I didn’t expect snow. And this is the real stuff. So it’s going to be fun. Hopefully our guys can perform.”Very funny, right?Mush. The Dodgers got on top early against rookie Hayden Wesneski, and it was tough sledding from there for the Chicago Cubs in a 9-4 loss, their second in a four-game series that wraps Sunday with a Clayton Kershaw-Marcus Stroman pitching matchup. But this is how good it’s going for the Cubs more than three weeks into a season with middling expectations even on a cold, miserable day of flurries and Dodgers home runs:You’ve pretty much got to pick on the rookie fifth starter to find something to be concerned about (albeit if...

HINGHAM — For some reason or another, the Hingham boys lacrosse team always found themselves on the short end of the scoreboard consistently whenever the annual Coaches Cup reached its conclusion. On Saturday, they finally were able to end their proverbial curse, while earning some payback in the process. Senior captains Charlie Packard and Joe Hennessey each registered a hat trick, while junior Nate Hoffman racked up 16 saves in the cage as Hingham avenged last season’s loss to Lincoln-Sudbury in the title game with a thrilling 9-8 victory over the Warriors.“We’ve been there banging on the door a ton,” said Hingham lacrosse coach John Todd. “Great programs there with L-S and Coach Vona, and the guys on his coaching staff. We respect the hell out of them. That’s why we created this tournament in 2010, for guys like him, John Pirani, Wayne Puglisi, Tommy Dalicandro and Brian McLaughlin…now the new guys with Matt Connolly, Nate Kittler, etc. …“The bottom line is that we saw a lot...

Beacon Hill residents said the tire-deflating vandalism committed by climate activists in their neighborhood was “cowardly” and “counterproductive.”Meghan Awe, chair of the Beacon Hill Civic Association, said “neighbors are annoyed” by last Wednesday night’s incident, which left tires on 43 SUVs deflated by international environmental activism group Tyre Extinguishers.“This community is a neighborhood who cares deeply about the environment,” Awe told the Herald on Saturday. “There are a number of issues where neighbors feel and take action and do things that reduce the carbon footprint in any number of ways.“And I think, at least for me, it’s like we don’t all have to be doing exactly the same thing to make the world a little bit better place.”People walk everywhere in Beacon Hill, Awe said, which she described as a small neighborhood that isn’t much different than Back Bay or the South End, and compost regularly. If a resident leaves their car out on the str...
