Sixteen Tesla crashes are the focus of a federal investigation into incidents in which a car using Autopilot ran into a stationary emergency vehicle on a highway. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a preliminary evaluation in August 2021 and upgraded it to an engineering analysis in June 2022.All the Teslas in the cases under study were confirmed to have been using Autopilot or Traffic Aware Cruise Control. Most of the crashes were at night, and flashing lights, flares or cones had been deployed near the stopped vehicles. The crashes caused one death — a Tesla passenger — and 15 injuries. The August 2021 summary from the agency’s Office of Defects Investigation included these findings:• Collision warnings were activated in the majority of incidents immediately before impact, and Automatic Emergency Braking intervened in about half of them.• On average, Autopilot aborted vehicle control less than 1 second before the first impact.• Where incident ...Police: Man dies in Oakland hills vehicle collision while fleeing attempted robbery scene

Heading up the twisty mountain road that winds up mighty Mount Diablo is enough to make you lunge for a thesaurus. How many ways can one say “hairpin curve” or “twisting road”? The coiling road, the enfolding curves, the — it’s twisty, people. Best to gaze out at the spectacular views, instead, and ignore the convolutions, because endless horizons await. At 3,849 feet, Mount Diablo may not be the highest mountain in the Bay Area — that honor goes to Santa Clara County’s Mount Hamilton. But from the summit on a clear day, you can see all the way out to the Farallon Islands, north to Mount Lassen, south to Hamilton and Loma Prieta and see 40 of California’s 58 counties. You can catch a glimpse of early aviation history, too.Commercial aviation was still new back in 1928, when a navigation beacon was placed atop the mountain. Charles Lindbergh had made his historic solo Atlantic crossing the year before. San Francisco Airport was celebrat...St. Patrick’s Day fare: With its potatoes, cabbage and bacon, Colcannon is an Irish classic

My dad, who has lived in Santa Rosa for more than 40 years, is from Galway, Ireland, and the home in which he was born is older than the United States. (I was a teenager when I first heard this extraordinary fact, and I was awestruck.) So many of the foods and traditions we enjoy here around St. Patrick’s Day resonate with me. Like all cultural holidays, this one offers the opportunity to embrace the link between generations and countries and to share the joys of my heritage with my children and friends.Serving corned beef and cabbage on March 17 may be a foregone conclusion here in the U.S., but it isn’t a traditional Irish meal. (I’m not complaining though. I like everything about corned beef.) Instead, roast chicken or boiling bacon (Irish-style bacon made from the pork shoulder and similar to ham) are common meals for the day, and potatoes and soda bread are non-negotiable.In my dad’s youth, food was still cooked using the fireplace. They made soda bread by placing hot coa...3 tasty, protein-packed breakfast bars and power bites to eat on the go

Sunscreen, water bottle and a healthy snack are the necessities to pack for your next Zen-inducing hike. But the snack part can be tricky. Granola is too crumbly and messy. Store-bought protein bars are loaded with sugar. And are you really going to bust out a sandwich on the trail?Homemade bars and power bites, a culinary social media trend that blew up last year, are the answers. Loaded with oats, nut butters, seeds or dried fruit, they involve minimal or no baking, and they’re highly adaptable and easy to transport, not just on hikes but for school lunches and breakfast on the go.Zero-Waste Chef blogger Anne-Marie Bonneau makes a Chocolate Cranberry Granola Bar with flaxseed meal and water — instead of egg — to bind the oats, bittersweet chocolate and pumpkin seeds together. Simmer + Sauce’s Andrea Potischman devotes a whole section of her blog to bars and bites, like Cowboy “Cookie” Power Bites and Apricot-Almond Breakfast Bars, which get their moist chew...Man who allegedly posed as 16-year-old arrested for inappropriate sexual contact with minor
