‘Troubling’: 1 in 5 American workers experience toxic workplace

The results of a new survey indicate nearly 1 in 5 U.S. workers experience working under “toxic” conditions, with 22% of workers saying it has negatively affected their mental health.These concerning numbers come from the 2023 Work in America Survey from the American Psychological Association.“The number of individuals who report experiencing a toxic workplace without protection from harm is troubling,” Arthur C. Evans Jr., Ph.D., APA’s chief executive officer, said in a release. “No one should feel fear at work. It is clear there is much work to be done to foster a positive work environment for all workers in the nation.”The mental health implications are severe, according to the study.Those who reported a toxic work environment were three times more likely to experience mental health harm when compared to those who reported a healthy workplace. MONTREAL (AP) — One person died and another was critically injured when they were knocked out of a sightseeing gondola Sunday at the popular Mont-Tremblant resort, authorities said. Quebec provincial police said the crash occurred shortly before noon when a piece of construction equipment struck the gondola at the mountain resort around 105 kilometers (65 miles) northwest of Montreal.Police said in an email that the other passenger was taken to a Montreal-area hospital with life-threatening injuries.Investigators from the major crimes division were sent to the scene. HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — Officers shot and killed a man wanted in the weekend killings of four people near Atlanta, and a sheriff’s deputy and a police officer were hurt during the attempt to take the suspect into custody, an official said.Henry County Sheriff’s spokesperson Syntonnia Moore said suspect Andre Longmore was fatally shot during a widespread search for the 40-year-old man. The intense manhunt began after the shootings Saturday morning in a subdivision of Hampton, a community south of Georgia’s main city.Moore said law enforcement forces killed Longmore in a nearby area of Clayton County, adding a Henry County sheriff’s deputy and a Clayton County police officer were injured in the attempt to arrest Longmore. Authorities have identified the man and 17-year-old boy who were killed in a crash involving a dirt bike in Wareham late Saturday night.Officers responding to multiple 911 calls reporting a crash between a dirt bike and a motor vehicle in the area of 121 Marion Road found two people unresponsive in the roadway suffering from apparent serious injuries, according to a statement issued by the Plymouth District Attorney’s Office.The victims, later identified as Robert Stalker, 17, of Woburn, and Brady Petrucci, 20, of Raynham, were taken to Tobey Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.Stalker was a student at Northeast Metro Tech.
