The Stanley Cup Final between Vegas and Florida will end with a first-time NHL champion

Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 00:52:57 GMT

Jon Hamm is excited for this Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights.“Stoked, man,” the actor and noted hockey fan said. “I live in L.A., so that’s a half-hour flight away for me.”The NHL is pumped, too. Even though the ratings will likely sag without big markets involved, the Sun Belt series will feature two teams that have never before won the Cup. It is also a chance for the league to show off its success growing in the U.S. beyond traditional hockey hotbeds.“It’s so refreshing and it’s so amazing,” retired player Anson Carter said. “When you constantly hear people saying hockey can’t work in the South or the Sun Belt markets, they’re wrong.”Carter hears his friends back home in Canada complaining about the NHL not wanting teams north of the border to win championships, and he dismisses it. Canada’s Cup drought dating to 1993 isn’t the fault of many of the Canada-born executives, coaches and players now working for Vegas or Florid...

Fifteen months into a war launched by their government against Ukraine, some Muscovites early morning on Tuesday for the first time woke up to explosions.“It was like the sound of a short thunder strike,” a man called Andrei, who lives opposite one of the buildings which suffered damage, told the TV-channel Dozhd, an independent station working from exile in the Netherlands. “For a moment it’s like you’re in a horror film, I ran to my relatives and yelled at them to get away from the window.”He said the incident had left those living in his area feeling “shocked and confused.” Russia’s defense ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that it had intercepted eight drones in a “terrorist attack” by Ukraine, although Kyiv denied its involvement and Russian-language Telegram channels initially spoke of 25 drones.Although not entirely unexpected — Russian regions bordering Ukraine such as Belgorod suffer almost daily strikes, and an incident in early May in which two drones...

Comfortably numb: Inside the Pink Floyd founder’s gig that Frankfurt tried to ban

Published Fri, 07 Mar 2025 00:52:57 GMT

FRANKFURT — Pink Floyd legend Roger Waters’ concert begins with a profane announcement to his critics.“If you’re one of those ‘I love Pink Floyd, but I can’t stand with Roger’s politics,’ then fuck off to the bar!” the loudspeakers boom. The audience cheers; no one leaves.Frankfurt authorities had tried to stop this show, but the ban was overturned. Israel has pilloried Waters for desecrating the memory of Anne Frank. Accusations of antisemitism against Waters gained steam over his use of Nazi-like imagery, a floating pig emblazoned with the Star of David and allegations he’s relativized the Holocaust. On Sunday night in Frankfurt, POLITICO got a first-hand taste of the famous rocker’s German tour — which already has him facing a Berlin police probe. While anti-Waters protesters gathered on one side of the building, concertgoers came together to guzzle beer and gobble bratwurst at the entrance to the sold-out show at Frankfurt’s Festhalle. What was their m...

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Five people remain unaccounted for, including two people whose remains may be in a pile of rubble at the site of a partially collapsed apartment building, officials of the city of Davenport, Iowa, said Tuesday.Mayor Mike Matson confirmed the numbers at a news conference following criticism that the city was moving too quickly toward demolishing the building before making sure that no one is still inside. Protests erupted after a woman was rescued Monday night, hours after the city ordered the demolition to begin as early as Tuesday.A family member of one of the missing people also spoke, pleading with people to understand that authorities want to bring the remains of the six-story building down in a controlled way without dumping more material onto the rubble pile. The building is “unstable and continues to worsen as time progresses,” Fire Marshal James Morris said. “It’s the opinion of the structural engineer that any additional search operations in the area ...

Three takeaways from Liam Hendriks’ big night on the South Side for the Chicago White Sox.1. The White Sox provided Hendriks with a closer-like entrance in the eighth inning of his emotional return to the mound Monday night at Sox Park. The strobe lights were in full effect. The video boards were all-Liam. The walk-in music, an EDM version of Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” was turned up to 11.Only one thing was missing. The Sox trailed the Los Angeles Angels 4-3, so it wasn’t a save situation.Manager Pedro Grifol said before the game Hendriks would not be used as a closer to get his feet wet in his first game back. Hendriks did just that, showing glimpses of himself while also allowing a pair of runs and making the Sox comeback attempt more difficult in a 6-4 loss. Now that his feet have officially been drenched, will Hendriks move back into the role he’s most comfortable in — and the one the Sox need to fill if they intend on actually contending...
