BOULDER CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Biden administration released an environmental analysis Tuesday that outlined two ways that seven Western states and tribes reliant on the overtapped Colorado River could cut their use, but declined to publicly take a side on the best option. One option would be more beneficial to California and some tribes along the river that have high-priority rights to the river's water. The second option is likely to be more favorable to Nevada and Arizona, which share the river's Lower Basin with California and say it's time for an approach that more fairly spreads the pain of cuts. That approach would force cuts on a proportional basis, when water levels at key reservoirs along the river dip below a certain point. Court inclined toward government view in Colorado River water rights case The Interior Department defended its authority to make sure basic needs such as drinking water and hydropower generated from the river are met — even if it means setting aside th...April heatwave: Denver breaks temperature record from 41 years ago

A balanced schedule for Major League Baseball inherently creates some scheduling quirks. For the Chicago Cubs, that means playing more games against the American League West (12) in the first seven weeks than against their division rivals (nine). After the April 5 rainout in Cincinnati, the Cubs will go more than a month until they play another National League Central opponent — when Willson Contreras and the St. Louis Cardinals come to Wrigley Field for a three-game series beginning May 8.President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer likes the reduction of division games, even if it means a lean stretch right now of NL Central matchups. He’s enjoying getting to watch the Cubs face standouts such as the Texas Rangers’ Corey Seager and the Seattle Mariners’ Julio Rodríguez.“That’s great for us and great for the fans,” Hoyer said before Tuesday’s game against the Mariners. “Six series against the Pirates or Cardinals or Reds I don...Franchy Cordero, Gerrit Cole lead the way as Yanks blow Guardians out

CLEVELAND — Aaron Boone isn’t sure why things never worked out for Franchy Cordero at his previous stops in San Diego, Kansas City, Boston and, this past spring, Baltimore.“I don’t know,” the Yankees manager said when asked Monday. “Game’s hard. It’s different for everyone. Some guys, it clicks early, and they have a Hall of Fame career. Some people, it takes a while longer.”One thing Boone has maintained, however, is that the corner outfielder can hit the heck out of the ball.“He’s got big time pop,” the manager said. “He’s got easy pop. The ball jumps off his bat.”Cordero showed that power again Tuesday when he launched his third home run in his sixth game with the Yankees after signing with the team just in time for Opening Day. The three-run, third inning bomb off overmatched Cleveland starter Hunter Gaddis provided an exclamation mark in the Yankees’ 11-2 series-tying win over the Gu...Jacque Vaughn learned how to deal with NBA superstars watching Doc Rivers

Jacque Vaughn played for Doc Rivers as a point guard on the 2002-03 Orlando Magic. On Saturday, Vaughn and Rivers will compete against each other as head coaches as the Nets and 76ers kick off their first-round playoff series in Philadelphia.Vaughn called it a “luxury” to play and learn under Rivers and said he’s known the Sixers’ coach for a long time.“Tremendous amount of respect and how many games he’s coached and the way he’s done it; won at a high level and been able to do it with different groups,” the Nets’ coach said after Tuesday’s practice. “Shows you how good he is. I think overall, he has a command of his team.”Vaughn said he learned from Rivers how to coach superstars, which came in hand when he assumed the head coaching post after Steve Nash’s dismissal seven games into the season. He was thrust into a role that required leading two NBA superstars in Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.
