3,000 hits is a long way away, but Twins’ Carlos Correa already in good company

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 23:46:24 GMT

When Twins shortstop Carlos Correa got his 1,000the career hit during a 9-3 victory over Kansas City on Tuesday, he reached the one-third mark on one of the most exclusive clubs in baseball.“He’s only 28 years old,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli marveled after the game. “To already have 1,000 hits, that’s a pretty amazing accomplishment.”Yet, at this rate Correa would have to play more than 25 seasons to reach the standard mark for hitting excellence. Only 33 players have at least 3,000 major-league hits, and only three eligible for the Hall of Fame have not been elected to Cooperstown — Pete Rose, Alex Rodgriguez and Rafael Palmeiro.Still, Correa already is a member of an impressive, if less elite, class — players with at least 900 major-league games who have averaged more than a hit per game. Heading into Friday night’s game against Baltimore at Target Field, Correa had 1,000 hits in 965 games, a 1.036 average. There are only 26 active major leaguers who fit that bill — Correa is No...

A Southern California man accused of killing a woman in Mexico and implicated in two other deaths has been compared to notorious serial killer Ted Bundy, according to a Vice News report.Bryant Rivera, of Downey, was arrested Thursday by U.S. authorities nearly two years after he began his alleged killing spree, Vice reported. Before his capture, Baja California Attorney General Iván Carpio Sánchez said the killer had “violent and psychopathic behavior,” and compared him to Bundy.Though implicated in the deaths of three women, Rivera was arrested in connection with the January 2022 killing of 20-year-old dancer and sex worker Ángela Carolina Acosta Flores, and Mexico is seeking to extradite him, according to an unsealed federal criminal complaint. Rivera, who apparently went by "Eduardo," and Acosta met at a popular strip club in Tijuana where she worked. Review: ‘Joy Ride’ is a glorious, raunchy, gross-out comedy

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 23:46:24 GMT

By Jocelyn Noveck | Associated PressIf you’re like me, there comes a moment of truth in raunchy film comedies when you decide whether to fully join in the fun — or ride it out on the fence. It often comes in a key early comic scene. Can they pull it off? If so you’ll be putty in their hands for two hours, ready to chuckle along no matter how gross it gets (think of that bridal dress fitting in “Bridesmaids.”) If not, you’ll shuffle uncomfortably on the sidelines, feeling rather like a prude. In first-time director Adele Lim’s ebullient, chaotic, nothing’s-too-gross-if-it’s funny road comedy “Joy Ride,” that moment came for me when watching Ashley Park swallow a disgusting concoction in a drinking contest, pretending all’s fine as her insides erupt. Expert comic chops cannot be faked. Park had me from that guzzle (and cemented it later with her Gollum impression.)Yet the impressive thing about “Joy Ride,” a c...

SF Giants top prospect Kyle Harrison ruled out of Futures Game with hamstring strain

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants’ top pitching prospect, Kyle Harrison, will not participate in the Futures Game this weekend after suffering a hamstring injury following his last start, the club announced Friday.Harrison, a 21-year-old left-hander out of De La Salle (Concord) High School, will be re-evaluated following the All-Star break, the Giants announced Friday. He was diagnosed with a moderate strain in his right hamstring, which can typically sideline players for up to a month.Harrison suffered the injury in a training session between starts, the club said. It puts a damper on an up-and-down first half in his first season at Triple-A. While he has flashed glimpses of his immense potential, he hasn’t harnessed his sinker-slider-changeup mix to be able to throw consistent strikes. Harrison is striking out nearly a batter and a half per inning but also averaging nearly a walk per inning, too, while posting a 4.97 ERA in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.Rated the t...
